Fear Not!

As we think about Thanksgiving, please remember that there are those in the Greater Montgomery area who are in need, not only of physical food but spiritual food and healing. Remember that "we" are the hands and feet of Christ in all we do. Holidays are very hard for many people here in the River Region.

Also, as our nations struggles with the issues of our time, let's always remember that invoking fear is not a loving thing to do. There are 365 verses on "do not fear" in the Bible. I think the Lord wants us to trust those promises.

Let's be the example to all, especially those who don't know the Lord. Let's share with others this holiday season that Jesus IS our Comforter, our Strength and Redeemer and we don't have to fear anything!

November is National Adoption Month

"The Christian who is pure and without fault, from God the Father’s point of view, is the one who takes care of orphans and widows, and who remains true to the Lord—not soiled and dirtied by his contacts with the world". James 1:27 (TLB)

What will be your response to this scripture? Look at the map attached here for Alabama.

Pray this week for our churches in Montgomery, in Alabama, in the United States to step up and give a child a family. It CAN be done.

When Will the Shootings Stop?

Another shooting in the last few weeks.......as well as dozens of individuals who are shot every day. When will it stop?

I would like to challenge everyone who is reading this today to stop and read the blog post below. A chaplain friend of mine shared it this morning and he works at a major hospital in where gun shot wounds are a daily occurrence. This post reminded me that many people DO get to a very desperate point in their lives and do things that maybe they would never do if they weren't so desperately lonely. God created us for relationship. Psychologists and clergy agree that loneliness and despair can drive a human to do things that they never thought they would do.....sometimes doing something "spectacular" to "make" others hear them(us). Some of us do things that are socially acceptable and others are to the point of despair that they do things that hurt others.

Read this and take the challenge today. Reach out to someone. Acknowledge that they are real and beautiful and created with a purpose in mind. TODAY....in Montgomery, reach out. Be Jesus to someone who you see who looks lonely or sad. It MAY just make a difference.

I like this passage in Romans 17:7-10 in the Message. It speaks to rejoicing in "rounding up" those who are on the "outside".

"So reach out and welcome one another to God's glory. Jesus did it; now you do it! Jesus, staying true to God's purposes, reached out in a special way to the Jewish insiders so that the old ancestral promises would come true for them. As a result, the non-Jewish outsiders have been able to experience mercy and to show appreciation to God. Just think of all the Scriptures that will come true in what we do! For instance: Then I'll join outsiders in a hymn-sing; I'll sing to your name! And this one: Outsiders and insiders, rejoice together!"

Read this prayerfully......

Internationals In Montgomery

Did you know that there are at least 50 other countries represented here in Montgomery? Those stats come from the students that we have at our MBA Conversational English School each year. The world has come to the Montgomery area through our Air War College at Maxwell, all of our universities and some businesses. Some are here because they were trafficked in for labor or prostitution. YES....here in Montgomery!!!!

Whatever you feel about immigration issues or "foreigners", it doesn't matter. What matters, as followers of Christ, is what God says. Thought I would remind us all this week of a few things that God says about how to treat those who are from other places.....no matter how they got here.

This week, as you go about your business, look around! People from all kinds of different countries live, work and go to school here. We are to treat them so well that they want to know more about why we do that! And then we can have an opportunity to introduce them to the God who created them, loves them and reconciles them to Him!

Pray over these scripture and ask the Lord to change your heart, if needed, and ask Him how you can be a witness to those from other places. He has them here for a PURPOSE. It is mostly likely so that they can have the opportunity to HEAR the gospel and respond to it. AND, as He changes our hearts, let's pray for the opportunity to minister and have a conversation about HIM!

So pray:
Exodus 22:21, "You shall not wrong or oppress a resident alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt."

Leviticus 19:34 . "The alien who resides among you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt; I am the Lord your God."

"Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some have entertained angels unawares." Hebrews 13:2

Exodus 23:9 “You shall not oppress a sojourner. You know the heart of a sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt".

Matthew 22:37-40 And He said to him, “ ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ 3“This is the great and foremost commandment. “The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ “On these two commandments depend the WHOLE Law and the Prophets.”

Malachi 3:5 “Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who OPPRESS the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who THRUST ASIDE the sojourner, and DO NOT fear me, says the Lord of hosts.

Pretty strong words from God's Word. Don't know about you, but I am not going to take the chance of being judged for "thrusting aside" the foreign born people because of politics or anything else. Let's show God's love this week as well as praying for our foreign born neighbors. YOU may be just the person to show God's love and help them have a relationship with Jesus!

If you would like to know about opportunities to serve our foreign born neighbors, contact Lisa Rose at 334-271-6794 or lrose@mgmbaptist.org

Mental Illness in Montgomery AL

Psalm 147:3
"He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds".

There are thousands of people in the Greater Montgomery area who live with mental illness and "1 in 4 Alabamians have a mental illness". (NAMI Alabama)

We are to care for those who are sick. Jesus never said, "only care for the standard illnesses" in Matthew 25, he just said "I was sick and you stopped to visit..."

So, in light of our call to "visit the sick", have you visited someone lately who lives with a mental illness? Have you offered some resources for them to have a more productive life?
The church IS responsible, according to scripture, to care for the sick and brokenhearted.

What can you pray for today in light of scripture?
1. Pray for the Lord to show you who to minister to today. There may be a situation you know about or have known about for a long time. PRAY for guidance and direction and He will show you which way to go. Many people are not just living with mental illness but struggling deeply and feel hopeless in their daily life.
2. Pray for Montgomery area churches to get educated about mental illnesses and become advocates for those in Montgomery who live with these illnesses. I have heard MANY people decide to leave church because no one took their illness seriously. That shouldn't be the case.
3. Find out resources for help. I will leave you with one resource you can start with and pass on to friends and family in Alabama who live with mental illness.
4. Accept mental illness as an illness that is real. It is not all made up. It is not dramatic. It is painful and many people feel that there is no way out. Be your friend or family members BIGGEST FAN and ADVOCATE.

Wings Across Alabama is a non profit support and advocacy group that helps people with Mental Illnesses to find hope and healing. They have a Warm Line that is peer led. Each peer counselor is trained extensively and it is free and very confidential.

Pray for all of us, as followers of Christ, to be supportive and loving to those who live with mental illnesses.
It IS the Jesus Way!

Will You?

Building a friendship.
Learning about their culture.
Celebrating their joys.
Crying with them in their sorrows.
Building trust.

Inviting the family(8) over.
To a tiny house with a tiny living room.
Eating a meal on TV trays.
Kids in the tiny other room drawing and coloring.

Talking about Jesus.
Sharing a testimony.
Giving the invitation.
He accepts it. Asks Jesus to live in his heart.
She rejoices as she has prayed for her husband for several years.

Changing the course of a nation.
By a simple choice to follow.
His people group needs Jesus.
He may be the "one" here in Montgomery.
To change the course of their people.

All it took....a tiny house. TV trays. A shared meal. Willingness to simply share how Jesus has transformed us.

Will you? No excuses. For the sake of the nations here in Montgomery?

Psalms 96:3 “Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples.”

Isaiah 58 for Montgomery, AL

After hearing a sermon on this, I felt led to use this text for our "prayer" this week here in the Greater Montgomery area. After our 5 week looking at some core issues here in this area, I thought it was appropriate to lay this passage out there for ALL of us to ponder this week. If it is familiar to you, don't skim over it. It is powerful and full of wisdom for those of us who are followers of Christ.

Ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten you on how to live out this passage here in the Greater Montgomery area.  Pay attention to the first part of this passage as you begin to read...this can apply to the church

“Shout it aloud, do not hold back.
Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Declare to my people their rebellion
and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.
For day after day they seek me out;
they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right
and has not forsaken the commands of its God.
They ask me for just decisions
and seem eager for God to come near them.
‘Why have we fasted,’ they say,
‘and you have not seen it?
Why have we humbled ourselves,
    and you have not noticed?’

“Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please
    and exploit all your workers.
Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard on high.

Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for people to humble themselves?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed
and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the Lord?

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
    and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

THEN your light will break forth like the dawn,
    and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness[a] will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
THEN you will call, and the Lord will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,
and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.
The Lord will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
    and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.
Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
    and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,

This is the Word of the Lord.......................FOR US in Montgomery!

Heart Change in Montgomery

Over the last 5 weeks, We have covered the 5 core issues that Montgomery Baptist Association feels are prevalent in the Montgomery area.

We have acknowledged that in the areas of consumer religion, race, schools, crime and poverty- ALL require HEART CHANGE on behalf of the church as well as those who struggle in these areas. That is the ONLY way that things can turn around. Would you be willing to commit to praying for our churches in Montgomery to be REVIVED and have CHANGED HEARTS?

If we all would allow the Holy Spirit to change our hearts, we would see many people come to Christ and have their own HEART CHANGE AND then we WOULD see MANY changes in our city.

This is one of my FAVORITE VERSES in the Bible because it gives HOPE for us all. As followers of Christ, we can find new life and a new heart of love and compassion as we submit ourselves to the Lord and for those who don't yet know the Lord, we can see a NEW HEART formed in them.

Ezekiel 11:19 - "And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh...."

What do we pray for then? Read these passages today for direction.
1. For the Lord to continue to show us the ways that we need to change our own hearts. Psalm 139:23-24
2. For the Lord to change the hearts corporately in ALL of our Christian churches. I John 3:17-18
3. For the Lord to open our eyes to the needs around us.
Matthew 10:5-8(specifically the Message)

Racism

RACISM can only be changed when people's hearts are changed. The way to heart change is through Jesus. The way to Jesus is through followers of Christ taking and living out the message of the gospel in our community.

There is no doubt that racism exists in and out of the Christian church. How can we overcome? Rev. Billy Graham nails it on the head for us as the Christian. "Racism is sin. Period".

Those of us who are "white" followers of Christ, really need to understand that we have no idea how deep the wounds are ingrained in our black brothers and sisters families. It goes back generations. We can't tell them just to "get over it". Especially in Montgomery and the Greater Montgomery area, we are to love our brothers and sisters of color and reach out in love. Don't try to understand because we have never gone through what their families (of many generations)have gone through because you can't. Instead, ask questions, learn to empathize and walk beside those who have suffered great injustices.

FOR ALL OF US----we can remember that through Christ, we have a bond like no other. We can ALL overcome our prejudices IN Christ. As our brothers and sisters in Charleston showed us, we need to always be ready to act in kindness, care and support toward each other even when terrible acts of hurt and maliciousness are pointed toward us. Let us be examples in Montgomery, AL to the world that we can LOVE and LIVE together BECAUSE of Christ.

I John 2:11
"But anyone who hates another brother or sister is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness"
.

Prayer Points:
1. Read Psalm 139:23-24-Ask the Lord if there is anything in your heart that needs to be removed that would cause you to not fully love others who are different.
2. Pray that our churches will be cleansed of any racist thoughts we might have both individually and corporately. There is NO ROOM for racism in the Body of Christ....none!
3. Pray that as we live our lives, go to work, go to church, go shopping....wherever we are, that we will treat ALL people the way God intends, as a beautifully formed creation of His. Treat others the way YOU want to be treated.

Rev. Alan Cross(pastor at Gateway Baptist) wrote a great book on Racism in the Southern Christian church. You might want to pick up a copy and read it.

Poverty

FIVE ISSUES SERIES:
4. Poverty

"The poor with always be with us"....is a true statement. Poverty will be here til Jesus comes back and we are to follow Christ while it is here with us. Montgomery now has over 27% of it's population that live at or under the poverty level. Before you dismiss someone who lives in poverty, watch the video attached and see what you may have not known. EVEN people who are SCAMMING the system NEED Jesus. As followers of Christ, we are called to share the GOOD NEWS with EVERYONE. As followers of Christ, we don't have the option to "pick and choose" who we minister to. We don't! God loves EVERY single soul that is on this earth and wants to have fellowship with Him.

After you watch the video here are few things to think about and pray about regarding those living in poverty.
1. More than 98% of people who live in poverty or get assistance are NOT scamming the system. They are mostly people who work( this includes military families in Montgomery) who can't make ends meet.
2.The poverty line for a family of 4 in the United States is $24,250 for 2015.(the video is from 2010). Could your family of 4 live on this amount per year without having to make difficult decisions?
3. Not all people on assistance are Black Americans. Most Americans on assistance are Caucasian.
4 Pray for ministries in our area who don't just give a hand out but a hand up in teaching new ways of budgeting, getting more education which leads to better jobs and when needed, filing for assistance. There are many people who have been hard workers all their lives and are now faced with job loss, debilitating medical issues and other life changing experiences.
5. Pray for how YOU can be involved in helping people in poverty. Can you share some of the "things" you have acquired? Can you tutor a child this Fall? Share Christ through teaching a Bible study? There are many ways YOU can help someone who lives in poverty.

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy". — Proverbs 31:8-9
"Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered". Proverbs 21:13

Though this is from the Catholic Campaign of Human Development, ALL Christians can join in helping families get basic needs met.

Schools

FIVE ISSUES SERIES:
3. Schools
Some would say our public schools are a MESS. Some think private schools are the answer. Some think we need charter schools and that will fix the problem. But guess what? Just like what we talked about with crime and consumer religion....
It is not a systemic problem.
It is a heart problem.

Kids come to school who are bruised and broken. Parents who are bruised and broken raise bruised and broken kids. Teachers can be bruised and broken. Administration is made up of people. PEOPLE ARE BROKEN. We all are.

I could easily write all the stats and tell you what is wrong with our public schools, our private schools and even debate you on charter schools but that would not change anything. What WILL change things no matter where you send your children, is HEART change.

How can that happen? By FOLLOWERS of CHRIST telling and showing God's love to those within the schools here in the Greater Montgomery area.

There are two specific things we as followers of Christ can do:
1. TELL the Good News to those teachers, children and administration who do not know Christ. Only through telling the Good News can one give the opportunity to make a decision to follow Christ. Are you willing to TELL others about Him, about your experience with Christ? About how HE can help guide administrators and teachers and parents to make good decisions so that the kids will follow?
2. Are you willing to pray for our schools this next year? What can you pray for? Here is a great list created by the Navigators. It is a good guide to follow. Copy and paste it onto a sheet and print it out to remind you to pray for our schools. Wonder what would happen if all of us took seriously the mandate to pray for others every day?

Philippians 2:3-4 "Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others".

Ten Prayers for Public(really ALL schools)Schools
Love. "Father, may the students and staff of this school experience Your love through the Christians they know in profound and authentic ways" (John 13:35).
Truth. "Lord, release truth in this school. Help students to rightly discern truth and not believe false teachings" (Proverbs 23:23).
School board. "I pray blessings on each school board member (try to pray for them by name). Father, may your will be done at board meetings" (Romans 13:1).
Principal/Teachers. "May they recognize the God-given responsibility he/she has for the best interests of the children who attend the school. May (name of principal) walk in wisdom, integrity, grace, and truth" (Proverbs 2:1-11).
Failing students. "Lord, I ask you to encourage those children who are struggling with their studies. Strengthen their minds. Help their teachers and parents know how to help them learn. Protect them from feelings of worthlessness and shame" (1 Thessalonians 5:14).
Violence. "Lord, stay the hand of violence against the children and staff of this school. Dismantle any plan to bring harm to them. Expose any weapon brought into the school premises and render it harmless" (Psalm 34:7; 54:1).
Christian programs. "Father, I pray for abundant blessings on programs that bring Christ into this public school. Help the groups who sponsor such programs function according to your Word and in harmony with each other. Bless the leaders and bring forth new and growing believers" (1 Corinthians 12:12,13).
Christian students/teachers. "Grant the Christian students who attend this school wisdom and boldness in living out their faith. Help them share effectively the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ with their classmates" (1 Timothy 4:12).
A chosen generation. "Father, may your kingdom come. From the students at this school, raise up a generation of people who worship you in spirit and in truth" (John 4:23,24; 1 Peter 2:9).
An open door. "Lord, may there be an open door in this school for the gospel to be shared with students and staff. Allow full advantage to be taken of every opportunity to name the name of Jesus" (Matthew 7:7; 1 Corinthians 16:9).

Crime in Montgomery

In his book, The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer says: “The followers of Jesus have been called to peace. When he called them they found their peace, for he is their peace…. they are told that they must not only have peace but make it. And to that end they renounce all violence and tumult.”...

We all recognize that the Greater Montgomery area(as well as our state and nation)has a CRIME problem. The law is good and it keeps perimeters for order and safety. When someone breaks the law, they have a consequence. Unfortunately, those deterrents don't always work. And it seems some days that it is getting out of control. So, how do we respond to the crime problem in Greater Montgomery? Do we move out of here? Do we buy more locks and alarms and bolt our doors? Do we stay in a mindset of fear and anxiety all the time? Just how are we, as followers of Christ, supposed to respond.

Here are a few things to think about and ponder.
1. Crime is a HEART problem. The reasons people commit crimes vary but it all comes down to the HEART. So, how does the heart change? Here is a great quote from a blog I read that you might want to ponder. If we see people as bruised reeds, then maybe we can address the issue before crime happens.
"It was said of Jesus: “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out “(Matt. 12:20). The next person in our community who may act out in violence is right now, today, somewhere, a bruised reed. A smoldering wick. Will we notice that person? Will we help that person back away from the edge of the cliff? Law enforcement officers cannot and should not supervise everybody’s lives. Our laws define civil behavior, but they cannot tame human personalities". Bible Gateway
2. Investment in peoples lives are where we define those who are "bruised reeds". We can't simply be nice to someone one day and then be through with them. Missions and ministry to our community involves being invested in our communities and getting to know, really getting to know, people.
1 John 3:17 "But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?"

IF we SEE that there are HEART problems in this world, we need to ask ourselves the question, are we giving answers to that "need" and showing those who are "bruised" how to find peace?

This week, pray for your neighborhood, your city and yourself. Ask the Lord to show you WHO is "bruised" out there around you and to give YOU wisdom on how to minister and mend those bruised hearts.

Praying for Greater Montgomery

As a reminder, in 2008, the Montgomery Baptist Association identified 5 key areas of need in the Greater Montgomery area. We have been praying around these needs over the last 7 years. There has been much change since 2008 and, not surprisingly, God is on the move!
So, if you are new, this is what prompts most of our prayer requests each week.

These needs are:
Crime. Poverty. Race. Schools. Consumer Christianity. These are issues that we as followers of Christ need to be concerned with as we live here.

Today's Prayer Points:
1. Look at the five key needs of the Greater Montgomery area and begin to pray about what you should focus on in your own outreach through your church or individually. Which area is the Lord drawing you to? How can you contribute to ministering in one or more of these areas?
2. Ask the Lord to open up doors for you to minister and share the Truth and Love of Christ with those you meet as you minister?

The parable in Matthew 13:1-9 is a great story that Jesus told to help us remember that all we do will reap something......what will your seeds of relationship reap this week?

"That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

Praying for Peace

A lot of things are happening not only in our nation but in our city that has brought up a lot of emotion. Let's pray this week that the Lord will fill us all with grace, humbleness and care. Be careful not to get into arguments over things and cause hate and anger. It clearly says in the Bible to not "stir up anger". Let's show the world/our city that we Christians can be caring and respectful in the way we talk about issues. It is not up the world to do it. It is up to us as followers of Christ. And if we as brothers and sisters can't get along, what is the world going to think about Christ? We are His representatives in all we do.

Everything we do and say must reflect Christ. Everything. Impossible? Nothing is impossible with God. We must call on the Holy Spirit every day to help us reflect Christ and bring peace.
Here is a good reminder to us all on the power of words.

Proverbs 10:11-12 "The mouth of a good person is a deep, life-giving well, but the mouth of the wicked is a dark cave of abuse.Hatred starts fights but love pulls a quilt over the bickering". The Message

Praying for Good Over Evil......

Yesterday was a day of many emotions for me. The terrible deaths of 9 believers in Christ in Charleston hit home around Montgomery and I heard on the news last night that many churches, including mine, took time to talk about and pray for the families AND the shooter.

Many news people have been stunned and overwhelmed with emotion over the way in which this group of family members and church members AND the town itself has handled what has happened.

Those of us who are believers should not be surprised about how our fellow sisters and brothers handled it and this should spur us on to think about our reactions to tragedy in our own city, our churches and our families.

As followers of Christ, we have instructions on how to deal with things that come our way in life. These Christians in Charleston chose to follow those instructions. Here is a reminder for all of us today as we face whatever comes our way as we live out the gospel in the GREATER Montgomery area. Let's step up and be examples to the world as well.  Let's blow the socks off the world and SHOW them the Jesus Way in EVERY aspect of our lives.

So we start with this each day:
Psalm 139:23-24 says this:  "Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting".

Then we remember these words as we go about our days.
Romans 12:9-21
 Love must be sincere.
Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
Be devoted to one another in love.
Honor one another above yourselves.
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.
Practice hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Live in harmony with one another.
Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.
Do not be conceited.
Do not repay anyone evil for evil.
Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[d] says the Lord.
 On the contrary:
If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[e]
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Pray over this each day this week and ask the Lord to reveal to you and to all followers of Christ in the Greater Montgomery area the ways in which we need to show TRUE LOVE to others that we work with, live with and share a neighborhood with.

From Smal Things Comes Great Things......

I just returned from a 40th anniversary celebration of the ministry I worked at in NYC for 16 years. I was privileged to be able to serve at a place where they LOVE the city and KNOW God has not forsaken the city. I thought about Montgomery and realized that we need to have that same passion and love for THIS city every day! God loves the people of the Greater Montgomery area and He WANTS everyone to have the opportunity to respond to the Gospel. EVERYONE. We had this verse ...as the theme verse for our weekend of "looking back and looking forward". The overall theme was "From Small Things Comes Great Things". Small beginnings can bring great futures.

The verses were Zechariah 4:6-10. Here it is:
"Then he said to me, “This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 7 Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: ‘May God bless it! May God bless it!’[a]” 8 Then another message came to me from the Lord: 9 “Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me. 10 DO NOT DEPSISE THESE SMALL BEGINNINGS, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”

Are you wondering if the Lord needs GRAND opening style "beginnings" in order to make a difference? NO......"do not despise the small beginnings...the Lord REJOICES to see the work begin"....

Many of us think that those small contributions that we make don't mean anything...THEY DO TO THE LORD. Plugging away for 40 years, many people came to work and poured into the ministry there and many people have had significant life changes because of the "plugging away" even with limited resources.

Be encouraged today of you are out there "plugging away" in a ministry or as a follower of Christ. From small things, great things can come".

PLUG AWAY in praying for our city. God loves this city full of His creations. Don't be discouraged. The Lord is working through every thing that is done for Him.

Summer Is Here...You Know What That Means?

Summer has begun!

School is out and it is time in the church world for VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL!!! WOOHOO!
In the Christian church, this is a great event for everyone in the church! It is also an intentional time to reach out to our communities through our Vacation Bible Schools.
...
Last year, a small church on the west side of Montgomery decided to be very intentional in reaching kids in their neighborhood. About 187 kids "from the neighborhood" came and heard the gospel in a variety of ways. ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY SEVEN.....for a smaller church. TO GOD BE THE GLORY.

This church has followed up and will be doing the same this year. Ten kids came to know Christ that year, eight became members of the church and were baptized. The Kingdom grew because a tiny church was available to receive kids, who were not "like them" in many ways, into their church family and begin to nurture them in their faith.

Vacation Bible School has a REAL PURPOSE...to share Christ to children and their families in a tangible way.

Prayer points this week:
1. Pray for your church's VBS. Be a prayer warrior for it. Pray for children and their families to have a genuine experience with Christ.
2. Pray for your church and the other Christian churches in Montgomery who are having VBS, that church members will see the value in praying and supporting this missions effort.
3. Pray that Christian churches in Montgomery will be willing to go out of their way to invite their neighbors and encourage them to come.

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
(Matthew 18:10 ESV)

Praying for the World Right Here in Montgomery

350 students from over 50 countries were registered through the Montgomery Baptist Association Conversational English School this past school year. The gospel was shared in many different ways through classes, visits, outings and one on one contact.

A student mentioned to a teacher recently : "Does God really exist? ...If you believe what is true, it goes against everything I was taught.....Will you pray for me? When people come to the United States, they WATCH our culture. They ask question...s. Are you ready to answer this students questions?

Will you pray for people in the Greater Montgomery area from over 50 countries who are here long term and short term? The world is HERE in our area. We have an obligation as followers of Christ to PRAY for those from other places that they will know the Love of Christ and will HEAR the Good News of God.

Prayer points this week:
1. Pray for English Classes ALL OVER the River Region where the Good News is being SHOWN And SHARED with students.
2. Pray for the students to be open and receptive to the Gospel.
3. Pray for teachers and volunteers who share the love of God with those students. Pray that they will be bold in their love.
4. Pray for Christian churches to be a beacon of light and hope to those who are from another country. Many are here to seek refuge from war torn areas and have experienced things that none of us can even fathom. God has brought them here for a purpose.
5. Pray for ourselves and ALL followers of Christ, that we will be open to sharing that GOOD NEWS that we ourselves have received.

Leviticus 19:33-34 “When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God".

Be A Light to the World

Matthew 5:14-16
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven".

Questions to Ponder in Time Alone:

1. Are we being the Light Of Christ in our actions?
2. Are you letting God's light shine through your lives at work, at home and with those who do not have a relationship with Christ?
3. Is your church being a beacon of light and hope for the Greater Montgomery area?

Great questions to ponder this week as we "Shine the Light" on the Greater Montgomery area.

Pray for the city to which He has us in right now. There is HOPE in Christ. Look beyond what you see going on in the news and remember that God is the Victor. We CAN make a difference in the way Montgomery SEES Christ through our actions, our thoughts and our love.

Praying for Our Schools

School will be out soon. Many are graduating from high school, making transitions from elementary to middle and from middle to high school. Life keeps moving for everyone and change is hard. Let's not forget to pray for those kids, their teachers and administrators...

1. Praying for all kids in the Greater Montgomery area as they transition after school is out to summer break.
2. Praying for the many kids who depend on eating breakfast and lunch at school each day. (there are ways you can help fill the gap this summer). Just ask!
3. Praying for teachers as they are doing end of the year reports, IEP's, etc.
4. Praying for all teachers to be reminded to be the very best they can be...because the way you teach DOES influence your students. (read scripture below)..
5. Praying for our community, that we will step up and get involved with our schools so that they can be the best ever!

Luke 6:40 “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.”

Mothers Day in the River Region

Proverbs 14:1 "The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down".

Praying for all mothers in the River Region today....no matter what their backgrounds....rich, poor or in between, Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, it does not matter. The Bible speaks of how important mothers are in the lives of humanity. In our area, many mothers are beaten down, overworked, etc. How can we, as followers of Christ, lift up mothers in our area?

The five areas of need identified by the Montgomery Baptist Association in 2008 were crime, racism, poverty, schools and consumerism. ALL of theses areas of concern affect mothers here in the River Region in many ways.

Pray this week for each of these areas and ponder how these areas of concern in the Greater Montgomery area cause mothers to have heartache, pain and grief.
Pray for women in our area who are mothers.
Pray for wisdom, guidance and provision for each of them.

Justice and Peace

Proverbs 29:26
"Many seek the face of a ruler, but it is from the Lord that a man gets justice".

I want to put that before us today with ALL that is going on around the world, in our country, our state and even our city. Seeking out a "person" to solve injustices will never work. Humans are not flawless, we are broken individuals who need the grace and wisdom that only our Lord God can give.

As you go about your day, as you see the news around the world, look to the Lord to provide justice and peace, not another human being. If we put our trust in mankind to stop all the violence and pain, we will continue to be sorely disappointed. It is just not possible for a human to dispense justice the way the Lord can.

Praying for ALL our cities and towns and communities today. Spend time this week focusing on God's justice, not human justice.

Pray for the PEACE of the city.......Jeremiah 29:7

Helping Those With Cognitive and Physical Disabilities

I spent some time this weekend with some friends of my boys who have special needs both physically and cognitively. One person was telling me that she did not go to church anymore because she never felt welcomed and the kids in her youth group always excluded her. Even though they were "nice" to her, they never called her when the "gang" got together for a movie, a football game or went over to someone's home to play games....all the things she liked to do. She felt she had reached out to them and invited them to things but they never showed up. She pretty much just gave up on church.
So, how do we help this situation? In most of our churches in the Greater Montgomery area, there are youth, children and adults with special needs--from autism to physical and intellectual disabilities. They feel isolated already at school and in public. It is a shame that they feel isolated at church. And brothers and sisters, they notice when they are left out!

What is there to do?
1. Reach out to someone who has a disability. Especially youth and children in your church. Along with their disability, they have the same hopes, desires and HORMONES as typical kids. Don't think that youth or adults are VOID of emotion or dreams/desires because of their challenges. Pray for ways to reach out to them. They WILL respond to you just like anyone who receives kindness. And PLEASE, stop treating them like the church "pet"(that is a quote from a young woman I know in another state).
2. Find a way to include them in adult and youth activities OUTSIDE the church. Invite them over for a movie night when the other youth or singles or adults are doing something.....don't be afraid. Pray for courage to get to know someone different.
3. Pray for ways your church as a whole can reach out to these people in your church(adult and kids)as a ministry. Reach out to the parents or caregivers of these members. Help them when you can. Most caregivers don't ask for help because they have been rejected too much. They need a break once in a while. Don't be afraid to step out and help.
4. Pray for those who have felt rejection from the church for their challenges. In God's church, EVERYONE should be welcomed and cared for, not just those we are comfortable with.

Acts 20:35 ESV "In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
If you are interested in your church finding ways to minister to people with disabilities and their caregivers, go to:

They are a GREAT resource for churches and individuals who want to reach those who are disabled, especially kids and youth.

Holy Week

Remember that this week is HOLY WEEK. The grace and mercy that we know in our lives did not come cheap. It was bought and paid with a heavy price for you and me. Jesus loves you and He wants you to know Him in a deeper way. Encouraging everyone to take some time each day this week to remember and read about His deep love for us. Start with the book of John and review and renew your commitment to follow Him.

Don't just be a fan of Jesus...be a follower. Be that follower here in Montgomery and the River Region where we live and work. Be fully engaged in living out the Easter story this week and every day!

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. NO ONE comes to the Father EXCEPT through me.

Our Life is Like A Vapor.........Here Today, Gone Tomorrow.

"How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog--it's here a little while, then it's gone". James 4:14

I have been noticing a lot of car wrecks, shootings(as usual)and other "in a minute" life threatening actions lately in the Greater Montgomery area...especially a lot of car accidents. We just never know what will happen when we wake up each day....a car accident, a shooting, a heart attack, a stroke, a startling diagnosis. James talks about our life is like a fog or "vapor" ..it is here for a while and then it is gone.

So, as we pray this week, lets think about how to LIVE as followers of Christ in a world where ANYTHING can happen to change the course we were on. When I lived in NYC, we always used the phrase "in a NY minute" meaning that things can change so quickly, we can't believe it happened!

1. Pray that YOU are ready to face the Lord. You and I do not know the day our lives will end on this earth. Are you ready? Really ready? Ephesians 2:8-10
2. Pray as you have opportunity to share that special relationship you have with others. They may not be "ready" to face the Lord God. That relationship in not ours to keep a secret but to freely share with this world. John 3:16
3. Pray that our lives, as followers of Christ, will exude a fragrance that is so strong, that people will want to be around us..that we might be able to "tell" them the Good News!! II Corinthians 2:15

Praying for ALL Montgomery followers of Christ to be sharing that good news with others as often as we can through our words AND our actions.

Loving Our Greater Montgomery Neighbor

I LOVED it when these signs came out in the 90's. I think they are smart and clever and they got "to the heart of the matter". So, this week, let's think about that. Love thy neighbor is not a suggestion and it is for sure not a "pick and choose which neighbor you are going to love". It is loving ALL people.

Romans 12:9-21(CEB)says this:
"Love should be shown without pretending. Hate evil, and hold on to what is good. Love each other like family. Be the best at showing honor to each other. Don’t hesitate to be enthusiastic—be on fire in the Spirit as you serve the Lord!Be happy in your hope, stand your ground when you’re in trouble, and devote yourselves to prayer. Contribute to the needs of God’s people, and welcome strangers into your home.Bless people who harass you—bless and don’t curse them. Be happy with those who are happy, and cry with those who are crying. Consider everyone as equal, and don’t think that you’re better than anyone else. Instead, associate with people who have no status. Don’t think that you’re so smart. Don’t pay back anyone for their evil actions with evil actions, but show respect for what everyone else believes is good. If possible, to the best of your ability, live at peace with all people. Don’t try to get revenge for yourselves, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath. It is written, Revenge belongs to me; I will pay it back, says the Lord. Instead, If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. By doing this, you will pile burning coals of fire upon his head.Don’t be defeated by evil, but defeat evil with good".

This applies to those of us living in the Greater Montgomery area.

Pray over these verses this week and see who God brings your way to love. It might not be the ones who are kind and sweet toward you. It might just be the person who rubs you the wrong way or gets under your skin or hurts you. Pour over God's Word this week so it will spill out onto others through your actions.

Praying for Our Schools

Here are some guidelines that you can use this week to lift up administration, teachers, students AND parents here in the Greater Montgomery area.

1. Pray for the Montgomery Public Schools and private schools in the area. Pray for the administration to not get caught up in paperwork but to remember that the paperwork is for the best interest of the students, not the adults.
2. Pray for counselors, psychologists and specialists who work with kids who have many different issues. Pray for wisdom as they handle each case and to know how to work best with each child they encounter.
3. Pray for teachers. Lord, help our teachers not be so overwhelmed. Pray that they will have good sleep each night to be able to face the days ahead. Pray for resource that they need to teach well. Pray that they will not be overwhelmed with all the needs the kids bring with them. Pray that they will know that they are not alone. Pray that God will make himself real to them wherever they are in their faith walk. PRay for their personal needs to be met.
4. Pray for parents. We can be our child's worst enemy sometimes when it comes to school. Pray for parents to be open and mature when conflict arises. Pray that they will know they are setting examples to their children on how to handle conflict. Pray that they will have their own needs met so they can fully focus on helping their child get the education they need to function in society.
5. Pray for students. Lord, there is so much out there today that kids have to face. Be with each and every child in our schools here in the Greater Montgomery area. Meet their needs. Calm their hearts. Bring adults into their life that will mentor them and guide them especially if they need one. Show them how valuable they are to you.
6. Pray for our city/county. Pray that we, as the community will take more of an interest in our kids education and be a help to the schools in our communities, not a hindrance.

 Titus 2:7
In everything set them an example by doing what is good.In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Do We Show Others That They Are Beautiful Creations of God?

This week, our state and city will be recognizing the anniversary of Bloody Sunday that took place "just down the road". As we pray this week for Montgomery, let's include our whole state and our country--that we, as followers of Christ, will be leaders in change. Yes, we have come far, but no, we are not there yet. The Lord loves ALL people. We must live our lives as Christ taught is...to love, not hate people.

People are his delight, his creation. We must treat everyone we meet with dignity and respect as well as recognizing they are a beautiful creation of God. There is no superior race in God's eyes. There is one race...the human race, who he set above all creatures because we are so special to Him. Let us take the lead when we see someone being treated wrongly and show others how to love.
Would you join me in praying that we each will be "light" in the midst of the darkness of this world?

Here is a great verse to ponder this week as you look around you at others....this is how He feels about all of us:

"The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you; in his love.... he will rejoice over you with singing"
.
 Zephaniah 3:17

Racism and Heart Change

RACISM can only be changed when people's hearts are changed. The way to heart change is through Jesus. The way to Jesus is through followers of Christ telling and living out the message of the gospel in our community.

There is no doubt that racism exists in and out of the Christian church. How can we overcome? Rev. Billy Graham nails it on the head for us as the Christian. Racism is sin. Period.

Here are some prayer points for this week:
1. Pray about whether the sin of racism clouds your view of who people are and the stereotypes we put on others here in Montgomery. Look at their hearts instead of their skin color. And if their hearts are in need of the Savior, show them how to know him.
2. Pray for ALL Christian churches to take stands when they see something wrong with how people treat each other.
3. Pray that you and I will see others we meet each day as creations of God, fully and wholly acceptable in His sight. The color of our skin is precious to the Lord. He created us. He doesn't make the wrong decisions in how He created us.
4. Pray for cleansing of believers hearts so that we can share God's love in ways that seem impossible.

"Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness".     I John 2:9

Crime and Heart Change

Crime will not cease until people's hearts are changed. The way to heart change is through Jesus. The way to Jesus is through followers of Christ taking that message out to the world....their community, city and beyond. Only through followers of Christ can people know LIFE CHANGE.

So here is the question: are we sharing the GOOD NEWS that brings heart change? Or are we complaining about crime, packing our bags and running to the next community that "seems" safer? Many of us struggle to want to do that all the time. But, in reflecting on this post today, I see that the only solution is not to run away from it but open my mouth and live my life as if my heart has been changed. Leaving a place that has crime is not the solution...sharing the gospel through word and deed IS.

Here are just two of the promises scripture offers to us about what HE does for us and for others.
Ponder them this week and think about whether you will be the vehicle of change that God can use for the Greater Montgomery community.

Ezekiel 11:19 - And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:

2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Loving Those You Want to Hate in Montgomery, AL

Great verse to meditate on this week as we continue to pray for our Greater Montgomery area. Part of loving Jesus is loving those we may not like. Look around you today. Who are those you don't like and don't want to love. That is the very person you and I need to be loving today.
Meditate on this verse every day this week.
What is God telling you through these words about loving your city/town?

If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
– Luke 6:32-36 (NIV)

Letting the Holy Spirit Guide

January 15-17th the first National Mixteco Summit was here in Montgomery. I got to be a part of the planning and participating. It was centered on those in the United States who are of the indigenous people group from Mexico. Participants were from all over the United States. Most had been working with this people group for a long time and some were new and curious about who they were.....it was a beautiful experience.

Read an excerpt from a participant who attended.

“While loving the sojourner in our midst was a heavily discussed topic, the greatest impression came when I saw the amount of passion, patience, and intentionality that was reserved for trying to reach these people effectively. I wasn’t around groups and organizations trying to Americanize this culture, but quite the opposite. Research, statistics, life experience, and even a handful of Mixtecs were present, all sharing their knowledge in order to figure out the best possible way to communicate the gospel where language is the largest barrier.  After seeing the amount of effort given and the odds that are stacked against them, I am convinced that one cannot truly evangelize cross culturally without a sincere and deep love for both Christ and people. In fact, I even heard one missionary affirm that you must love for an open door. ..Paraphrasing my last session, in order to maximize our outreach, we must be committed to the entire design. Our approach must be simple, effective, and reproducible. Otherwise, when it is our time to leave, the harvest will die as we remove the lights from their lives. Jenny Reese Clark
She added this verse: “Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.” Proverbs 19:2

That verse is appropriate for ALL we do for the Lord. We have to LEARN a persons cultural background or life experience in order to effectively minister to them. Not only are there over 1000 Mixtecs in the city of Montgomery, there are numerous people from ALL cultures and backgrounds that live in our city....we MUST be willing to get to know them, love them and let the Holy Spirit guide our way.

Prayer points:

1. Pray for the Mixteco people group here in Montgomery and surrounding areas. Pray for the workers who are already ministering and for those who will come in the future. THIS IS International Missions.

2. Pray for ourselves and ALL of our churches, that we will have both the desire and the knowledge(get it)to minister to those the Lord brings our way!

3. Pray for our city, that the Christians will not lose heart, but continue to love others and honor others above ourselves. That is the call.

Mixteco National Summit

Happy New Year. We took a break for the holidays. Hope you were continuing to pray for our Greater Montgomery area as you spent time and reflected on Christmas.

Here is an upcoming event that needs your prayer support as well as your participation.

Mixteco National Summit

Since 2008, the Montgomery Baptist Association and the Mixteco Missions Task Force have been working with churches and individuals who are ministering to this people group here in the Greater Montgomery area. There are over 1000 individuals that we know of that reside in the Montgomery area. That does not include Elmore, Autauga, Bullock and Pike County where we know there are more. The world has come to Montgomery and to Alabama.

Would you like to be a part of sharing Christ with them?
Come to the Mixteco National Summit here in Montgomery, AL and learn about the culture and ways that are relevant to them as you share Christ with them. It is being sponsored by the Montgomery Baptist Association, the Montgomery Mixteco Missions Task Force and the SBC International Mission Board. ALL Christian churches are invited.

We need to know ASAP to be able to provide meals for everyone. It will be Thursday night, January 15-Saturday afternoon, January 17th.

Call Lisa Rose at 334-271-6794 or email for more details and a schedule at lrose@mgmbaptist.org
